I will be Joyful

My God with me
even in distress
In God my Savior
I will be joyful
whatever comes my way

He is my protector
walking by my side
He is my Lord, my comfort
leading my heart to singing
in every step of my days

Yet will I rejoice

Not some candy-coated
some rose-colored perspective
my eyes wide open
to my current state

Yet will I rejoice
joyful in my being
even when calamity comes
I will trust in the Lord

God there with me
for me all of my days
leading me through the waters
the fires of my way

Leading me in my trials
there when I fear
leading me to rejoice
ever in His care

The Musings of My Soul

Without words
the musings of my soul
my Spirit singing
ever to You Lord

May they be
pleasing in Your sight
ever glorifying You
the longings of my heart

The Musings of My Spirit

Deep within me stirring
the musings of my spirit
calling me to act
to speak out against injustice

May you guide me,
making me rise to my feet
leading me to seek justice
for everyone on earth

Teach me, oh my Father
guide me in my time
lead me in Your service
to conform my heart to Thine

The Tug of Your Calling

Uncomfortable
the tug of Your calling
to leave the pews
the congregation
safety with these walls
to go where we are led
to submit to You our all

We pray for Your guidance
an answer to our yearnings
to live out the faith
what we feel in our hearts
yet we long, we linger
we wallow in our comfort
growing only inside
without serving our neighbors

The world where we are to work
out there beyond the doors
to go as we are able
not as we are ready
using what we have
the things we have been gifted
to go as we are led
to the ends of the earth

Serving our master
loving our neighbor
bearing witness to
the grace of God in our lives
Going out beyond these walls
into the street
the radical hospitality of Christ
showered on our feet

Dropping the Staff

I wonder about the rest
what was going through his mind
dropping the staff was easy
but what of the next command
to bend and lift the snake
not knowing what to think
wondering if it would strike

We don’t spend much time
in these words of scripture
but I can only imagine
his hesitance
to reach down
to pick up the snake

What a sign of faith
what a witness to this moment
trusting in God’s provision
His protection in all things
But another lesson
when we feel too small
God with us always
to help us fulfill His purpose
making us able
to do amazing things

Rejecting Your Word

So easy, with such consequences
cavalierly, carelessly
rejecting Your Word
the hope of the scriptures
the love of God revealed
in the stories of the bible
in the history of the people
the lessons for our lives
each of us a part
of the story continuing
each of us a page
in the book of life
Called ever, as were the others
all those who had gone before
in the stories of our lives
Each of us can follow
the calling of God
each of us can choose to reject
God’s plan for our life

To Another Land

God calling each of us
to serve His holy purpose
to commit our lives to Him
according to His plan

We are the hands and feet
needing to follow
to go where we are sent
up from our comfort

To another land
to a different time and place
serving our master
wherever He would lead

Listening for His whisper
heeding His still small voice
letting the Spirit guide us
wherever He would lead

A story of choices

Needing graphic witness
the story of choices
all of the bible layered
with those who have followed
the calling of God
with those who have rejected
the hope of salvation
The love of God revealed
in the story of the people
in how His arms were open
How He was rejected
false idols worshipped
man’s hate for one another
corruption the hope of the garden
from the very beginning
How we disavowed
the majesty of God
How we turned our backs
when He called to us
How in spite of all this
He climbed the cross to save us
all of us saved
if we turn to Him
if we call Him Abba
if we follow Him now
yoked with our savior
conforming our steps to His

Rejecting Grace

In our journey on the earth
we are given choices
many forks along our path
many opportunities
God ever knocking
calling out to us
Seeking to bring us to Him
wrapped in His embrace

Rejecting grace over and over
a chance to be in His presence
we reject the love of God
whenever we turn to the world
All of us are guilty
wrapped in a layer of sin
keeping us from Him
until we turn our lives over
committing our fate to the Lord
trusting only in Him

Only if we go

The message of the scripture
all of our choices
only if we go
when we hear God’s callings

Why do we struggle
why do we not believe
God ever is faithful
calling to us, please

Come back to me
go where I will send you
heed my calling
the purpose of your life

His plan is perfect
His love sublime
He calls us and empowers us
showing us the way

We only have to be faithful
to submit our will
choosing to conform our journey
to the way before us
to way that leads to life

Choosing a Path

Sometimes in specific moments
so clear in retrospect
each of us given choices
to follow where we are led

Choosing a path for our lives
sometimes in specific moments
when a bit of God’s grace
is place right before us

Each of us given choices
to choose a path for our days
whether we will follow the world
of conform to God’s ways

Fateful moments when we turn from Him
throw away such treasure
leading us to a path of destruction
away from the light of grace

Where I will show you

God not sending us out alone
He is walking right beside us
going with us all of our days
out into the world

He will guide our steps
to a land He will show us
where we are to serve
sharing the grace of God

We are to be His witnesses
but we need to go
where the lost sheep are living
to heed his calling to us
to serve where we are led

sometimes more subtle
yet always calling us

Leave your country
go out into the world

not beside you in church

Go where I send you

Yes

All of the grace contingent
the love can be wasted
if we fail to answer
if we do not say yes
at the calling of God

He is there waiting
His arms open wide
His Spirit guiding
if we will come by our side

We are given the choice
to follow which master
to continue following the world
rejecting His offer
or saying yes to the calling of God

Going

The central story of the Bible
the choice each of us make
whether we are faithful
to the callings of God

Will we ignore Him
when He calls to us
will we follow the world
or go the way of the cross

Our shepherd calling
the Spirit within us
trying to get us to turn
to conform our steps to His

Going as His children
following when He says, “come”,
this is what sets God singing
when we come back to Him

The story continues
a sequel unfolding
the journey ever going
onward, ever
the path of history
the saints living
other scripture being written
to the end of the age

Our Enemies Are Welcome

We are to be faithful
going where God sends us
He wants relationship
with all people
Our enemies are welcome
into the family
If they turn at His calling
just like you and me
God’s love unending
His grace sublime
All called to Him
away from the world
Happy for all who change
and who follow when He calls

Climbing the Tree

Christ choosing
to be humble
making him the sacrifice
dying on the cross

The priest choosing
to become the lamb
climbing the tree, the altar
to become the sacrifice

Mindful of the Price

Ever may we be
mindful of the price
thankful and humble
for the sacrifice of Christ
mindful of the weight
what he carried
the pain he suffered
the high priest
our hands upon his head
becoming the lamb
going to the cross

When We Follow

Our faith real
when we follow
when we are guided
walking in the footsteps
of the living God

Our lives an empty vessel
when we pour out the world
to be filled by the creator
for his holy work

When we turn
from the worldly focus
turning inward
to the Spirit’s whisper
the to His voice
to the calling of God

when we yoke to our savior

Only if We Turn

The measure of our witness
the depth of our faith
when it is a struggle
for follow the Christ
Only if we turn
conformed to God’s ways
going where we are sent
submitting all of our days
This is the measure
the depth of our faith
when we commit our lives to Jesus
and follow the master’s call
when we seek his guidance
and submit to Him our all

Washed in the Waters

Under the waves
washed in the waters
our baptism joining us
with the Christ

Dying in the waters
rising with Him
walking with our savior
on the journey of our lives

His blood cleansing us
changing us utterly
washed in the waters
serving in the way of the cross

the water of His blood
washing away my stain

A Glass of Water

Something we take for granted
a simple glass of water
so many others
unable to drink

Nothing clean
often disease filled
a glass of water
only in their dreams

We need to bear witness
act on our beliefs
that all should have plenty
plenty to drink

A glass of water
shouldn’t be a struggle
a right to all the people
all the people on earth

Something to Drink

Something simple
after each school day
the girls asking
for something to drink

So many choices
what I can offered
waters aplenty
in different disguises

Something to drink
nothing we think of
of those who are without
all around the world

Pause in your lives
to think of so many others
struggling each day
just for something to drink

The Wood of Our Witness

Each of us different
but all of us worthy
none of us more important
but all of us special
each of us empowered
to do our savior’s work
each of us called
to use our unique gifts

The wood of our witness
different grains, different colors
some rich and hard
others supple and bending
all of us called
as we are able
all us commissioned
to share God’s endless love

Shining Brightly

Shining brightly
God’s glory in our witness
praises ever
for our savior, our king

Sharing our gifts
what we have been given
water pouring out
from the gates of heaven

Each of us blessed
unique in God’s sight
each of us shining brightly
his love to reveal

We are called
each in our season
witnessing to God
to his amazing grace

Singing as we are able
with the gifts we are given
that all would know God
in the witness of our lives

In our bright colors

Each of us special
a treasure to God
each of us serving
according to our call

Each of us gifted
something for the kingdom
serving to make disciples
to the glory of God

In our bright colors shining
testifying to grace
bringing the gospel
the message of love

Bearing witness
to the ends of the earth
Shining in our bright colors
sharing Christ with all

In the Colors of Our Gifts

Each of us may sing
offering to God
in the colors of our gifts
our lives, our service
singing your praises
offering others
the grace of God
a servant to our neighbors
a witness to the nations
shining brightly before our dying
singing praises to our king

A Witness to Our Future

Shining like the maples
brightly in autumn
the greens transformed
in colors of the rainbow
singing joyously
praises to the creator
as a witness to our future
when we see God face to face

Light shining in the darkness
bright colors against the gray
the darkness of this age
the lowly earth where we tread
God reminds us
in the colors of the season
to be a light to the world
messengers of God’s love
