Offering Our Lives

In response to God’s gifts
we offer our lives to God
all we have given, even that not enough
for all we have received;
but a worthy gift,
our lives to God

Too often, we hold back
lending God but a portion
a piece of ourselves
uncommitted to his call
blind, selfish, self-centered
following the ways of the world

Turn back to God
in the temples of our hearts
following the Christ
offering our whole selves
all that we are
humbly giving to God

Clothe Us in Love

We, disciples of the Lord
saved by his choice
redeemed by his sacrifice
Clothe us in love
the mantle, the yoke
God, love
draped upon our lives

Able to forgive our neighbors
because we are loved
strengthened, free,
following the Christ
the example of our brother
guided by the spirit
walking in the way of love

To God’s Will

Christ, Love
God come to earth
the son, a man
submitting to God’s will
living out the father’s plan
Good, walking in the world
washing away our sin
the cup to his lips
bitter fruit of human hearts
the pure lamb
weighed down
the yoke, the cross
a crown of thorns
the cloak of our shame
humiliated for our sake
setting us from sin
walking according to God’s will

Submitting

To the will of God
submitting to servanthood
enduring agony
the way of the cross
sacrifice in this life
from the very beginning
before he was the babe
laid in the manger bed
knowing the cup he must drink
the bitter taste,
the mantle of sin
the weight upon his shoulders
carrying our shame
our stain in his blood
shed for our redemption
following the master’s call
submitting to his will

The Meaning of Their Song

Joining the melody,
swaying in the pew
on the night, silent night
the holy night of the birth
Advent, come down
Christmas at its cusp
singing with the angels
the meaning in their song
almost incomprehensible
overwhelming

God, Love, descending from heaven
into the virgin, God, Christ
born into humanity
humble, servant
in the manger bed
come into the world
to stitch shut the breach
the way from our sin
our darkness
into the loving arms of the father
walking with God once more

The Inner Workings of the Song

The words of the poetry
the love, given by God
like the inner workings of the song
the story of Christ
our king, our savior
the babe born in the humble stable
placed into the manger bed
the lamb, climbing upon the cross

God come down to earth
living as a man
walking a righteous life
saving us from our sin
in his rising from the dead
ascending to heaven again
all in fulfillment,
seated forever on his throne

The Arms of the Fan

The elegant maple
arms, almost equal
an arc, a spray of flowers,
a bow, curved against the sky
arms of the fan
calling the eye, to study
the beauty, the symmetry
skill of the creator
design in the capillaries,
the veins, the bronchioles
the alveoli, all of them exposed
dipped, thrust into the air,
gathering the scent of snow
pristine, elegant, stoic,
reverently placed,
standing resolute,
in the cold of winter
as I drive home

The Song of the Angels

Trying to imagine
the song of the angels
that holy night
so long ago
waking the shepherds
from their slumber
joy for heaven, for the world
Christ born in Bethlehem
the babe in the manger
our king, born to set us free
joy, love, come down from heaven
to reunite us with our God
Glory in the highest
and peace
come down to earth

No place in the inn

no place in the inn
no room for them
the savior of the earth
born in a borrowed stable
laid in a manger bed

not in regal power
in fine linen or gold
walking the earth as a peasant
no possessions his own

living in the world
but never falling into sin
taking on our debt
paying it in full

going to the cross
rising from the dead
the babe, the man
the king of heaven
of him we joyously sing

Going to Jerusalem

Leaving Bethlehem
beside the manger
under his natal star
going to Egypt, to Nazareth
walking the dusty roads of Galilee
following my master by the sea

In the crowd on the mountain
seeing him heal the sick and the lame
his message, his love, revealed to all
in his words, in the touch of his hand

Going to Jerusalem
beside him on the way
his eyes set on the temple
following the way of the cross

Speaking the truth
his words with power
confronting the people,
the authorities
leading to that hour
bread broken and the cup shared

Praying in the garden
submitting to the master’s will
to cup to his lips,
climbing the cross for me
Beside the tomb on Easter day
walking to Emmaus with our Lord
Our king, from the manger to the cross
Leading me home to him

Giving to Jesus

Going to Bethlehem
following his natal star
the words of prophecy
fulfilled in his coming to earth
God, love, into flesh, a man
Christ born in Bethlehem
peace is at hand

Journeying, each day of my life
trying, each step of my walk,
following the master’s call
kneeling beside his manger
looking into my savior’s loving eyes

What will I give him
what present shall I bring;
Me and me alone
all I am is his.

The Savior of the World

The humble baby
sleeping in the stable
in the manger bed
Love born, come to earth
God with us, Emmanuel
the savior of the world

Not by power, might
as with a king, the Caesar
with love, a servant
Giving his all
his will given over
to the master’s plan

Taking on our sin
going to the cross
the lamb, a sacrifice
Washing away our sin
rising to glory
that we may live

Love Came Down

An embodiment, in the flesh
God, Love, came down
down to our earth
to this good earth

The Christ, the Messiah
fulfillment of prophecy
the stem of Jesse
leading a righteous life

The Son, the unblemished lamb
offering for our sin
born to die on Calvary
that we may be made clean

The king, our salvation
rising from the dead
waiting for us in heaven
when we leave this mortal coil

The Burden of Poverty

Traveling, journeying
going to Bethlehem
because they must
Under the rule of Caesar
the burden of poverty
no room for them in the inn

Taking his family,
into the stable
laying their baby down
in the manger bed
Journeying far,
coming to the town,
his ancestral home

The burden of poverty
weighing him down;
but wonders to behold
the shepherd, the star
the wise men with gifts
laid down, kneeling
by his manger bed
more of the story
yet to unfold

Come to Bethlehem

Like Joseph and Mary,
the shepherds, wise men
we come to Bethlehem

Expectant, journeying
hopeful, for a new beginning
the Christ-child, Love
God entering the world

Walking, as a man
sharing God with us all
on his journey, his days
from the manger to the cross
preparing a place for us
in heaven above

Standing in the Shadow of the Cross

Second day of winter, before Christmas
standing in the shadow of the cross

The cold, Advent
waiting for the coming
the birth of the king
The Christ-child
born, laid in the manger

Joy, peace, love come down
saving us, climbing the cross for us

Rising, ascending
that we may join him, with God

Fed by His Words

Not by bread
fed by his words
offering hope
a way through the troubles
a place beyond this world

His message, his life
giving a different direction
Love, not power
caring, not wealth
the way of the Lord

Fed by His Words
after reading comment on the following poem
-------------------

Racing To The Shore

To be with him,
if only to touch
the edge of his coat
to be healed
Hungry people
racing to the shore
to where he would land
going before him
so they may be healed
so they may be fed

While We Wait

More to be done
To spread the good news
Love come into the world
While we wait
Expectantly for the Christ-child
More to do
To prepare his way
Opening hearts
In the story of the Christ
Love come down from heaven
Nothing will be the same

Our Work Unfinished

In the waiting
the Advent, coming of Christ
we must continue
our work unfinished
sharing the good news

Joining the heavenly chorus
the saints up in the sky
heralding the coming of the king
the Messiah, arise

Sing with the angels
hark, hear the news,
in the night of this world
Christ has come to save
love come down to earth
to bring us home to God

Walking Daily

In our walking
daily with Christ
the yoke upon our shoulders
our steps beside his
The call to spread the news
God’s love come down
to earth, to share
a way through the wilderness

We are the messengers
the hands and feet of Christ
the voices crying out
urging love to replace hate
sharing together
with the saints who came before
the task, the plan of God
healing the breach of man

Sin wiped away,
the consequence of blood
given by the lamb upon the cross
going there, a sacrifice
Telling the world
the power of God’s love
able to seal the breach of man
a life in heaven awaits

Called to the Breach

If we think about the fundamental call
the charge given by Christ
to spread the good news
to offer his love
Called to stand in the gap
Joining Christ there,
his story to share
who is the way across
that divide, that breach
between our sin and God's love

Fear Not

Fear not, people living in the dark
the light is come, Christ,
the first born son
the lamb of God
come down
to save us from ourselves
to bring us home again
Fear not watchmen of the night
heaven come down to earth
Christ was born to save

The Threats in the Night

Modern shepherds
watching in the dark
guarding the flock
from threats in the night
the world, in chaos
crime, terror, war
diseases out of control
Angels proclaiming
the good news for us
Christ, our savior
born, in Bethlehem!
Still today,
in these present days
the message of great joy
good news to all the world
Christ is born in Bethlehem
let heaven and the earth rejoice

All Heaven Sang

The angels, the heavenly host
joining the song
the night the babe was born
God, in flesh come down
A gift, a miracle
from the virgin a son
God walking on the earth
born in humble station
not in a palace, royalty
All heaven sang
long into the night
under the natal star
a wonder, a delight
Joining the chorus
each one in our time
the song of the ages
Christ has come to earth

If only all had heard the good news

Speaking as one, the prayer dedicating
turning back a portion
of what God has given us
If only all had heard the good news
as our murmured prayer intoned
if the joy of Christ were truly known
and understood, around the world
this is my prayer this day
that the words would be true
that the telling, the waiting
the coming of the Christ-child
would be a retelling, not a revelation
in the hearts of the whole world
Until that day, we join the heavenly chorus
Christ has come to save!

Two Men

The Caesar and the Christ
so different, kings
of regal birth, in a manger laid
power, authority, humility, death on a cross
by might to rule, by love to serve
opposites, called saviors in their time
very different models
woven in that moment in time

Today only one stands
whose birth we wait for
to this very day
the son of God
come down as man
the Christ, our Messiah
Lives and reigns

Between Two Thieves

Watched over by the animals
in the stable, his manger bed
love came into the world
born to save us all
that we may live

Dying, between two thieves
at the end of his life
no crown, thorns instead
our humble king to the last
for our sins he died

Taking on the wealth of our guilt
our stain upon his flesh
going to the cross for our sin
rising on the third day
that we may rise with him

Knowing Their Plight

The least, the last
lost in this world
wandering, homeless, refugees
we upon this earth

From a manger bed
no room for them in the inn
our savior, his humble birth
knowing their plight

The king of kings,
a humble peasant child
born to save the world
doing the master’s will

Saving all in need
each of us owned by our sin
bringing us to God,
when we give up our will

A Time for Waiting

Advent, a time of waiting
the coming of the Christ
Love, God
coming to earth
God’s answer
to the prayers of the faithful
sending Christ, the way
bringing us back to God
preparing, repenting
listening to the angels
on our knees, praising
at his manger bed

Waiting Always

A way of life
waiting always
not just at Advent
the coming of the Christ
the child, the king
coming to earth
our hearts open
expectant,
Christ changing the world
We, his brothers, sisters
spreading the good news
always waiting
for the coming of Christ
into the world again

His Coming

in our silence

Ruling with Love

The infant, the savior coming
the babe in the humble manger
not in power, in glory
coming, ruling in love

Offering hope, life
for all, the poor,
the powerful alike,
love enough

not like a king, the Caesar
humbly born, in a stable
laid in a manger bed

Come to serve, not to rule
love come down to the earth
sacrifice, by his choosing
reconciling us to God
in the way he left this earth

Announcing His Birthday

Like the others
the children in the bulletin
adding the name
sharing with the congregation
the other special child

Announcing his birthday
the Christ-child,
the reason for Christmas
his coming heralded
throughout the heavens
and down here on earth below

Remembering his birthday
the coming of the king,
not in his glory;
as a humble baby
nestled in his manger bed
of him we sing

To Give His Life for All

Coming into the world
the humble infant, king
coming down from heaven
to give his life for all

A servant in this world
the lamb, the chosen of God
bringing us back to the Lord
one changed heart at a time

He Sent Jesus

God’s love
sent to earth

in human form
giving us new birth

Making a way
through the evils, chaos
the sin of this world

A way into relationship
love, grace, a gift
back to the garden

God coming down
the babe in the manger

the Messiah, our savior
Come down to earth

Street People

The street people
homeless and alone
the shepherds watching
in the cities, urban landscape
in the dark, cold night
They would be the ones
hearing the songs of the angel choir
going to the place under the bridge
where the Christ child was born
there to find the father and mother
the child wrapped as best they could
Kneeling at the savior’s bed
a box, newspapers, that was all
there in the cold of night
answering the angels call
Out into the world
proclaiming the Messiah’s birth
wondering who would listen to the message
such humble witnesses
alone in the streets

Would it be under a bridge

If Mary and Joseph
entered into a city, a town
where would they lay their heads
is no room was found
would it be under a bridge
in a part, the woods
who would play the part
of the angels, the shepherds
where would the Messiah lay his head
